Bugged Out: What to Do if a Bug Crawls into Your Ear

Finding out that a bug has crawled into your ear can be alarming and uncomfortable. The sensation of something moving or buzzing in your ear canal can cause panic, but it’s important to stay calm and know the best steps to take for relief. Here’s what you need to know:

What Does It Feel Like?

If a bug enters your ear, you may experience:

  • Tickling or buzzing: The sensation of the bug moving around.

  • Pain or discomfort: Due to the bug's movements or if it scratches your ear canal.

  • Hearing changes: A blockage may reduce your ability to hear properly on that side.

What To Do When a Bug Crawls In Your Ear

While unsettling, bugs in the ear are generally not dangerous. Stay calm and try the following when attempting to remove the bug:

  1. Avoid inserting objects: Do NOT use cotton swabs, fingers, or other objects to remove the bug, as this can push it deeper or damage the ear canal.

  2. Tilt your head: Tilt your head to the side so that gravity can help the bug crawl out. You can also try gently tugging on your earlobe to create a slight vacuum.

  3. Use light: Sometimes, shining a light near the ear can draw the insect out, as bugs tend to move toward light sources.

  4. Use Oil: Tilt your head so the affected ear is facing up. Pour a small amount of body-temperature oil (mineral, olive, or baby oil) into your ear. The bug should float out. However, avoid using oil if you suspect a ruptured eardrum or have ear tubes.

When to Seek Medical Attention

If you are unable to see the object and your removal efforts have failed, stop and seek medical attention. Delays or unsuccessful attempts at removal can increase the risk of infections and complications.

If the bug doesn’t come out easily, seek medical help from an Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist. Medical professionals can safely and effectively remove the bug using special tools or gentle irrigation.

If the bug causes severe pain, bleeding, or if you experience dizziness or loss of balance, visit an emergency room immediately.
